Various studies have
shown that the Indian herb guggulipid is effective
for lowering cholesterol and serum triglycerides.
New Straits Times - Persekutuan, Malaysia
Guggulipid is a name given to the gum
resin exudates from the guggulu tree (Commiphora
mukul), which is native to arid regions of India,
Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The guggulipid cholesterol-lowering effect is
believed to be due to the ability of the herb
to inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver
as well as increase cholesterol breakdown and
elimination. Long-term usage of guggulipid has
also been shown to lower total cholesterol and
reduce LDL cholesterol while simultaneously elevating
high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.
Guggulipid also has mild blood thinning properties
that help lower blood pressure too. It is a very
safe herb that is free of side effects normally
associated with the use of cholesterol-lowering
medications such as statins. Sensitive individuals
have occasionally reported headaches and stomach
discomfort but this can usually be avoided by
taking guggulipid with meals.
